Module 1
Reflective Mentoring

Driving Focus: As you engage in Module 1, consider the varied roles you may hold as a mentor and the nature of the work the mentee may be engaged in as they are learning to teach.  Are you working with a brand new field hours student? An intern? A new teacher?  How will the nature of the mentee’s role and yours inform the mentoring process? How will your refinement of evidence-based practices positively impact your mentee? What will change as your mentoring role shifts across your professional journey? What will remain constant?

After completing Module 1, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the current context of reflective mentoring in teacher education and teacher induction.

  2. Evaluate personal readiness for reflective mentoring of teacher candidates and new teachers.

  3. Describe the practice of reflective mentoring to include culturally relevant, antiracist, and trauma-informed principles.

  4. Provide opportunities for mentees to develop culturally relevant, antiracist, and trauma-informed practices.

  5. Identify strategies to support mentees in engaging in self-reflection.

  6. Recognize specific practices (HLPs) proven by research and evidence to leverage student progress, particularly those with disabilities.

Before You Begin

Before you begin Module 1, take a moment to think about your own experience as a new teacher. What was student teaching like for you? What do you remember about your mentor(s) during this time? Rate your experience as a student teacher and as a mentee below, using a rating of 1-5 stars to indicate whether your experience was closer to BAD (1) or GREAT (5).

Then answer the reflection question, "How will these experiences inform how you mentor a new teacher or teacher candidate?" Record your thoughts in your Module 1 Companion Guide and submit your answer by selecting "Submit" at the bottom of the survey.

Then click "Next" at the bottom of this page to get started.
